MBA Bulletin #1 - Cluster #3
The first thing to be excited about is that you are now part of Cluster 3! This means you will be in Cohort G, H, or I. Natalya Levina is the Cluster 3 advisor. Natalya will be writing soon to introduce herself to you. You can write directly to her with questions, or, of course, continue to contact the MBA Program Office.
You can find your first MBA Bulletin, specific to your Cluster, on the MBA Program Office website. It helps prepare you for the next few weeks and for the first days of Pre-Term and includes information about first day events, waivers, and the leadership program. We have also posted a Pre-Term schedule, or grid , that outlines the academic calendar and some of the informational events to come. We are still in the active planning stage and some details may change, but this will give you a taste of what is to come. Note that you can now see the exact dates on which you will attend the mandatory Learning Team Retreat and the Diversity Workshop.
We know the suspense is killing you, but you have to wait until July 31 at the Welcome Reception to learn your cohort.
Wharton Class of 2013 on Facebook
If you haven t already, now is a great time to join the Wharton MBA Class of 2013 Group on Facebook ( facebook. com). This is a place to communicate with your classmates, see updates and fun facts from the MBA Program Office and share photos.
Leadership at Wharton
The Wharton Graduate Leadership Program welcomes you to Wharton! From intensive Leadership Ventures and Leadership Development Workshops, to sustained leadership learning through the Leadership Fellow, Nonprofit Board Fellow, and Venture Fellow programs, you will be able to choose from different leadership development opportunities to analyze and build upon your strengths.
We look forward to welcoming you at the beginning of Pre-Term at our Leadership Overview on August 1. Your first intensive foray into Leadership at Wharton will occur during the Learning Team Retreat - the kick-off for first year students learning team experience where you will meet the members of your learning team and begin the process of productive team formation. At the end of Pre-Term, you will complete the required Management 652 course, which begins August 26.

We have posted an overview that describes the Retreat and a Retreat logistics and packing guide that will help you prepare for the event, both of which can be found here: http: wlp. wharton. upenn. edu MBA learning-teams-retreat. cfm.
Math Waiver Exam
The online Math Waiver Exam is now available. You can access it through a Canvas Course Site using your Wharton username and password. If you have not yet set up your Wharton username and password, please follow the instructions on page 23 of Get Started and do so immediately. You will have access to the math waiver exam within two business days of establishing your Wharton account. If you cannot set up your Wharton username and password because you do not have a PennKey, write to mbaprogram@wharton. upenn. edu so that we can assist you. Please note that if you do not have a Wharton account by July 25, you will not be able to take the math waiver exam due to logistical issues with account creation.

You will have two hours to complete the math waiver exam once you begin. You may not pause the exam once you have started it, so make sure that you have a two hour time period blocked out during which you will not be interrupted. Please note that we cannot be responsible for errors with your internet connection. In the event you encounter a lost connection during submission or after the time limit and the system did not receive your submitted answers, you will have to take the Math Proficiency Exam on August 16th in Philadelphia.
The waiver exam is a closed book exam. You should not consult with any materials or people while you are taking the test. You are on your honor. For your reference, the Wharton Ethics Code may be found in the Canvas Course Site.
Taking the exam on your own is both ethically expected of a Wharton MBA and important to help you gauge your proficiency with the math skills you will need during the program.
If you have any questions about the logistics of the waiver exam, the Pre-term class or August 16th exam, please contact mbaprogram@wharton. upenn. edu. You can also contact us if you have technical difficulties and we will direct you to the appropriate office. You should feel free to use the Discussion Board in the Canvas Course Site for questions as well.
Technology at Wharton
What about wireless at Wharton. How do I get connected to the system? What about my phone?
The technical side of setting down can be daunting. Wharton Computing has a new helpful page for new students that’s intended to walk you through some “getting started” technology steps (i. e. , things you can do even before coming to campus). See http: spike. wharton. upenn. edu support newstudent for specific instructions.
Health Insurance and Immunization
The University of Pennsylvania requires all incoming students to be immunized against certain diseases and to submit this information. You also are required to fill out two personal health questionnaires and electronically sign a consent form. This is done through a secure website called the Student Health Portal. The deadline for submission is July 1, 2011. See Immunization for more information.
The University requires you to provide proof of insurance by August 31, 2011 or you will be automatically enrolled in the Penn Student Insurance Plan. However, you must be covered by health insurance by the time you begin Pre-Term. If you need insurance coverage prior to August 15, contact Deborah Olson at Aetna Insurance.
Every year, someone thinks they are still 18 and pops an achilles tendon. A minor financial hit if you have insurance - thousands of you don t!

Upcoming Deadlines:
July 1: Immunization compliance (see Student Health website)
July 11: Pre-Term and language class registration. If you are having problems setting up your PennKey and Wharton accounts, please contact the MBA Program Office.
